Are CEU Courses Considered a Business Expense?

Can I write off my continued education courses?

Are My Education and Licensing Fees Tax Write-offs?

YES, if you are self employed, your education will be a tax write off.

The massage profession requires upkeep: CEUs and Liscensing. Luckily, for self-employed folks, both are considered tax expenses.  In this article we will discuss each and at the end of the article you will be able to benefit from our annual DFR year-end sale on courses should you see a fit.

Continued Education As A Business Expense

Did you know that you can add education to your business expenses when it comes to tax time?

CEU courses are necessary in order for practitioners to continue to grow, learn and offer quality care. In some states and under certain certifications, CEUs are mandatory.

The extra expense of taking courses can add up -especially when you are an inspired practitioner who loves to learn new skills. The good news is that CEU courses, books and materials are a tax write off in most cases for self employed individuals.

Visit the IRS website for more information:

You may be able to deduct the cost of work-related education expenses paid during the year if you’re a self-employed massage therapist.

To be deductible, your expenses must be for education that

(1) maintains or improves skills needed in your present work or

(2) your employer or the law requires to keep your present salary, status or job.

Self-employed individuals include education expenses on Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship)

Expenses that you can deduct include:

  • Tuition, books, supplies, lab fees, and similar items
  • Certain transportation and travel costs
  • Other educational expenses, such as the cost of research and typing

Certification and Lisencing Fees

The annual costs of licensing fees  and memberships are also a business expense as long as it relates to your business in operation, you can deduct license fees for improving/maintaining/renewing your trade.  In massage therapy this can pertain to:

  • Certification costs
  • Licensing costs (State, City, Organizations)
  • Membership costs
  • Certification, License and Membership Renewal costs (if there are any)
